Guitar Upgrade, Addons, Modifications -
Upgrades
are something else I have done quite a bit of. Most often it involves pickup
replacements, switching options, or other electronics modifications. I
dip the pickups in ALL my guitars, and have done this for many people,
in particular those who's music requires high volume or high gain. Nothing
sucks more than a guitar that squeals like a herd of angry pigs in between
notes or howls like a wolf in heat between riffs. On a number of my guitars
I have made a simple modification to the tone pot which allows me to sweep
between two different high end rolloffs. Quite a few of my past customers
have had me do this to their guitars.
.
Switching
options are another modification I've done quite a bit of. Sometimes a
player would prefer series/parallel in place of the stock coil cut, sometimes
a guitar does not have the feature, but the pickups allow for it and they
want the option. I will say I would prefer not to permanently alter a guitar
to add options such as this when alternatives are available. One of those
alternatives is a push-pull tone pot. This is a normal tone pot that when
pulled up acts also a a coil cut or series/parallel switch (the switch
it actaully built into the pot).
.
Tuning
key replacement is one other service I have done quite a bit of. I will
say though that this is always only when needed. Often all that is required
to correct a loose or sloppy tuner is adjusting the tension, or at worst
replacing a broken/missing tension washer. When tuning key replacement
is in fact necessary, it is best to find tuners that will match the mounting
of the originals as closely as possible. That is unless you have something
specific in mind such as Sperzel locking tuners or moving from Schaller
to Grover. If there are old mount holes leftover it is always best to at
the very least seal the wood in the old screw hole or fill the hole and
drop-fill a little lacquer over it. This prevents moisture from penetrating
the raw wood and decreases the chance the finish around the hole will de-laminte
in the future.
.
Although
what I outline here is not all I can do, these are the most common jobs.
It cost's nothing to ask, so feel free to contact me and we can duscuss
your ideas (also for free). I love talking guitar after all. |
