Guitar Repairs -
Much
of the work I do is setups and maintenance but every guitar at one time
or another requires repair. Everything from bad pots or jacks (quite common
on todays horrid Korean and Chinese guitars), to worn saddles and bad tuning
keys. Scratchy pots or pots with dead spots can make even a seasoned live
guitar player nervous at a gig, and loose or failing jacks can mean that
guitar solo comes out as one huge buzz or not at all. A worn saddle can
pinch strings and cause them to break prematurely, sometimes at the most
inopportune times. I much prefer to opt for better quality components when
replacing something, in particular pots, switches, and jacks. It makes
no sense to put in junk in place of junk.
.
Sometimes
guitars suffer damage, not intentional of course, but it does happen. I
have bent several tuning keys over the years in mishaps. Parts break from
stress, and simply wear out from use. I realize we live in a throw-away
world, and many people simply opt to pitch their ailing guitar or dump
it on eBitch but there are also many guitar players out there like me that
have found a guitar we love, regardless of what it is, and would prefer
to keep it up to snuff than to acclimate to something new.
.
I
have done everything from simple component replacement to takng humps out
of those horrible Korean necks on guitars today. One problem I have had
on nearly every guitar was fret faceting. It would seem most eBarf sellers
consider this acceptable, but in reality degrades a guitar's intonation
and playability. I have done re-crowns and partial spot levels on quite
a many guitar, and it can make a world of difference. Probably the only
things I do not do are acoustic re-construction which is best left to someone
who has worked with acoustic construction and professional refinishing.
I plan to offer custom finishing in the future when finances allow me to
acquire the proper tools. |
