- Mid 1970's Aria Pro II PE-150 -
It has most definitely got it's share of dings and such, but with this particular guitar, for some reason, this appeals to me. Maybe it is the fact that all the '60s LP Specials I have ever seen were in similar condition. It originally came with plain sealed tuners and a standard LP Jr./Special wrap-over bridge/tailpiece but sometime in it's past someone replaced it with a genuine Quann Badass (which is what I would have done anyway, or at least a Schaller). Unfortunately, the country bumpkin that replaced it used 6 machine nuts for anchors instead of retrofitting Gibson tailpiece anchors which made life a bit aggravating to say the least. I managed to get the nuts out, but because they were not tapered at the top it did lift a small chip of finish next to the hole. I then had to align the correct anchors in the oversize holes and pack around them to tightly to secure them in the body.
.
The genius that installed the nuts failed to slide the ground wire down along the sides of the nuts but instead went in between them and against the threads of the post. The first time I tried to adjust the action it broke the wire. Buzz City Central! Well, it's together as correctly as I can make it and the patchwork turned out very well. The correct anchors keep the bridge parallel with the body and offers a little more downward pressure on the saddles to keep the strings seated (the Badass bridge was notorious for "sliding string" syndrome which is why many techs like myself would notch the saddles). Sustain has improved considerably.
.
Naturally I dipped the pickups and cleaned the pots and switch. I reversed the magnetic and electric polarity of the bridge pickup to give it a bit more distinct tone in the middle position and is definitely an improvement over the standard forward polarity. I absolutely love the tone of this guitar! Both clean and with gain/overdrive. It has a beautiful clear yet warm tone clean in the neck position, and the bridge has plently of bite. This guitar has '70's Hard Rock written all over it with some good ol' fashioned gain!
