Well,
I finally got that PE-R80 to replace the one I played down to nothing!
Another pawn shop giutar, this one is actually farther from stock than
my original R80. It has a Graphtech nut which will go bye bye and a brass
nut will go back in it's place. One thing I know for sure, those darn DiMarzio
Air Zones will have to go! My rig is just not geared or EQ'd for the DiMarzio
crunch. Everything I play through is set up for more of a classic Gibson
tone, (smoother, warmer, not quite as aggressive pickups). I run
the presence pretty high which gives these pickups way too much bite (painful
almost). I don't necessarily have a major problem with DiMarzio pickups,
and I would love to try a pair of their PAF Pro nickel covered pickups.
It's just that ever since I have played around with the Duncan Jeff Beck
nickel covered (SH-4) I have been hooked.
.
It's
amazing it made it here at all! Fedex did not pick it up for 4 days, their
tracking system doesn't seem to be accurate, and to top it all off, when
they delivered it, they said FRONTDOOR signed for it yet they left it leaning
against a mailbox post up on the road! My house is 400' from the road and
anyone could have snagged it. To add to this, had I not went up to check,
it would have been left out in the storm that passed through not an hour
later! Let's not even go into how it was packed, althouh your really can't
call just dropping it in a mis-shapen box packing at all.
.
It
was not in the greatest shape when I got it. The thing that bugs me the
most is a 1.5" section of binding has shrunk and lifted away from the body
on the inside of the cutaway curve. Most of the hardware was badly tarnished,
the pickups squealed, and it was filthy and had those freakin' pawn shop
stickers on both front and back. You know, the ones that leave a ton of
goo when you peel them off. The original toggle switches were gone and
standard DPDT minis are there now, which is fine with me. I rarely use
the phase switch anyway. The search for another PE-R80 has been going for
over 3 years, and I'm glad it's finally over!
.
Update:
I dropped a pair of Duncan Jeff Becks (SH-4) with covers and did that ever
make a difference! It's a wicked Rock and Roll machine with that growl
and bite, but still retains the warmth of the covered humbuckers.
