Ibanez AS-80 Butterscotch
One
of only three Korean guitars I own, this plain jane is in reality a monster.
I had picked up and played many 335 copies before this one came home to
join the crew. Every once in a while I come across an accidental jewel
in the mass of mediocrity and the "Butterscotch" is just that. I must have
played 30 AS-80s/120s but this one was made on a real good day! The body
rang and held a note well even before I jacked into an amp. The action
is unbelievable. The only two gripes I had with it were the crappy sounding
pickups. Thin, microphonic, low output pickups had no business in this
particular axe. I didn't necessarily want to put Gibsons in it, so after
a little checking around decided on a matched pair of Duncan Jeff Becks
with nickel covers. BINGO! 30 minutes after the first time I fired it up
with the JBs in it both myself and the guitar were drenched with sweat
and I was grinning and giggling like a school girl! I can only think of
one other thing that gets me like that, and no, I won't go into detail.
=]
What
can I say, the Jeff Becks make a whopping difference. It took a little
while to get used to the higher output and extra "punch". What a chunk
of wood now! The sound samples didn't turn out too bad, but the guy playing
shouldn't quit his day job! Problem is, I already have. =]
It
was reconfigured with different pickups for a country player I know. It
now sees regular use out live and he's quite happy with the fact it laughs
at high volume. |
