Detailing: Detailing is definitely
the most time consuming of the services I offer, but much more involved.
Detailing not only involves complete disassembly but also careful attention
to cleaning as well as painting the castings a mock factory grey. Most
carbs over time have lost the original greenish factory coating, and in
some cases have even oxidized down to the bare aluminum. During the cleaning
process the oxidation is removed and sometimes this uneven weathering shows
to some small degree. Painting the carbs gives them a uniform appearance
and factory fresh look. Rust removal is included in thje detail work but
I cannot guarantee the rust has not left a permanent mark in pitting or
scarring of the metal. As much of this is cleaned up as physically possible.
On rare occasion a part is better off being painted instead. Many parts
were plated at the factory, and often this plating has since eroded. If
this is gone, and ususally evidenced by rust on steel components, the remaining
patches of plating is removed and the steel treated with a penatrating
oil to retard future corrosoin and rust.
.
To add to the appearance
the bowls and caps (and rings on older 71-76 carbs) are polished, and the
factory chrome components if applicable are also polished. The outside
edges of the stay plate are polished and in areas where a wheel cannot
reach a soft rotary wire brush is used. The throats of the carbs are cleaned
to a shine as well.
.
The carb bodies while naked
are acid dipped and painted grey or black depending on the customer's preferences
using ceramic high heat engine paint. This paint is not completely fuel
proof (actually no single stage paint is) but holds up quite well to gasoline
and oil. I may consider offering powder coating in the future but with
powder coating is is not possible to touch up chips, scrathes or other
damage as it is with readily available ceramic engine coatings.
