Three
cans of de-greaser and two hours later the cases were ready for engine
paint and the jugs/head clean enough for black. Poor Jon about had a heart
attack when he saw me take nearly every part out of this engine! It was
supposed to be grey engine paint but this almost looks like hoolio chrome.

Here
(top left) Jon is doing some polishing (He wanted to be involved in the
build and save some bucks), and for the most part the aluminum polished
up nicely without showing too much of it's age. One wheel had to be snagged
on eBitch and I already had an 18" rear with tire. The engine came together
with ony one hitch and that was having to swap out the last gear
on the output shaft of the tranny to mate up with the final drive. He opted
for Clubman bars. When I was younger Clubmans were often used on the old
bobbers and choppers before Z-bars came into the picture.
..
Rather
than trying to track down either a used frame with good numbers or buying
one and going the DR tag route I dug out an old frame I had with an aftermarket
bolt-on hardtail section. It was originally mine in 1985, then sold to
my best friend. He was nearly finished when his Mom pitched what she thought
was a box of junk, but was actually half the engine innards. He later got
married and gave up. I bought it all back for a winter project. But, he
decided to chew on the business end of a shotgun so I simply packed it
away to keep from thinking about it. That was almost 20 years ago. I now
think that Fat Bob would be happy to know his sled will soon be on the
road. A fiting tribute to a righteous bro I think. I managed to cock the
tail back and down a bit because this thing originally sat damn low with
the stock tubes and would ground out all the time. It is welded in place
now.
