I
was tipped off by a friend that in a nearby town a kid had begun a cafe
project and never finished it. Believe it or not there WAS a title! I guess
it was a noble start on a cafe racer but not much had been done, and some
of what had been was far from safe to say the least. Wrong wheels and spacers,
wrong rear axle, hacked frame, ruined front shocks (they had tried to convert
standard spring shocks to air shocks), and everything electrical was gone.
The upside is the engine although filthy was in relatively good shape.
Hopefully the aluminum will polish out nicely. I still don't understand
why I get myself into these projects, save for the fact that it will get
done and at least one more old Houndog will be pounding pavement again.
What I want ot know is why do these hacksaw happy dorks always leave the
leftover
warts all over the place? Don't they know this is tacky, almost urban hillbilly?
.
I
am estimating the project will run me between $2200 and $2600 if I do everything
I want to. The aim is to give it a classic 50's-60's look with round profile
skirted fenders, long turnout exhausts extending under the saddlebags,
apes, oversize whitewall tires, skirted solo saddle, early fatbobs, and
as low a saddle height as possible yet still keeping the suspension. I've
logged well over 200K miles in the saddle of a hardtail and I'm due for
a comfy ride any more (and so are my poor achin' kidneys). Work has started
and I will be posting more pics and info soon. The whitewall tires might
be a bust since no-one seems to make a 17" for the rear.
